Articles in English (A / An, The): Explicación + Ejercicios

Articles

Los artículos son las palabras que usamos delante de los sustantivos.
Ej: El árbol, la mesa, un perro, una caja…

Hay dos tipos principales:

  • Artículos indefinidos → a / an
  • Artículo definido → the

Vamos uno por uno

🔵 Artículos indefinidos: A / An

A y an significan un / una.
Se usan cuando hablamos de una cosa o una persona de forma general, no concreta.

Usamos a / an cuando hablamos de:

  • una cosa en singular
  • algo que no es específico
  • algo que aparece por primera vez

Ejemplos

  • I have a dog → Tengo un perro
  • She is a teacher → Ella es profesora

📌 A o AN: ¿cuál uso?

Depende del sonido de la palabra siguiente.

A + sonido consonante
AN + sonido vocal

Ejemplos

  • a book → un libro
  • a car → un coche
  • an apple → una manzana
  • an orange → una naranja

💙 Nota: no depende de la letra, sino del sonido.

an hour → una hora (la h no se pronuncia)

a university → una universidad (suena /juː/)

🔵Artículo definido: The

Usamos the cuando hablamos de algo que:

  • es único en ese contexto
  • ya sabemos de qué hablamos
  • es algo específico

Se usa tanto en plural como en singular y en sustantivos contables e incontables.

Ejemplos:

  • The dog is black → El perro es negro.
  • The books are on the table → Los libros están sobre la mesa.
  • The water is cold → El agua está fría.

EJEMPLOS COMPARADOS

  • I have a dog. → Tengo un perro (uno cualquiera)
  • The dog is very friendly. → El perro es muy simpático (ese perro)

4. Corrige el error.
